Interview to Ilse van Liempt on Het Financieele Dagblad
Effectiveness of new migration deal with Egypt is questionable
Ilse van Liempt / March 2024
Ilse van Liempt (University of Utrecht) was interviewed by the Het Financieele Dagblad on the new deal with Egypt.
She argued that these deals are presented as easy solutions for complex problems. When escaping Egypt becomes more difficult, more migrants will become dependent on smugglers. Smugglers profit from closures of borders. It will make migration even more risky, deathly even.
She also argued that, with these deals, European countries are made responsible for human rights violations in countries like Egypt. It might seem out of sight, out of mind for many, but it is our policies that are making it impossible for asylum seekers to arrive somewhere safe where they can ask for protection.
