Nando Sigona (University of Birmingham) speaks to AFP/France24 about the UK’s partnership with Bulgaria to stop inflatable boats used by migrant smugglers from reaching the French coast. He explains why, with the UK’s general election only a few months away, it is crucial for the UK government to be seen active on the immigration issue. Being seen as incapable of stopping irregular crossings in the English Channel is especially dangerous considering that ‘taking back control’ of British borders and cutting immigration was a central pledge of the pro-Brexit supporters now in government.
