My hands are my story. Twenty years of life of Polish domestic workers in the city of Naples

This chapter examines the experiences of Polish women employed in domestic and care work in Naples over a twenty-year period, drawing on two qualitative research projects conducted in 2004 and 2024. Focusing on migration trajectories, labour conditions, legal status, and processes of inclusion and exclusion, the chapter highlights the persistence of informality, vulnerability, and racialised and gendered representations of “Eastern European women” in the Italian care sector, despite major political changes such as Poland’s accession to the EU. Particular attention is paid to ageing, long-term irregularity, and the ambivalent position of Polish domestic workers within hierarchies of labour, whiteness, and belonging. The chapter is included in the edited volume Emigrazioni e immigrazioni polacche in Italia. Doppi sguardi.
